From students’ favorite Halloween candy to their thoughts on biking, here are this week’s top college student insights.
Halloween
Halloween is right around the corner, and a new College Pulse survey of 700 undergraduates finds that students rank Kit Kat Bars and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups as their favorite Halloween candies. By comparison, students’ least favorite candies include Laffy Taffy, Lifesavers, M&M’s, and Twizzlers. Students who attended a public high school are twice as likely as those who attended a private high school to choose Kit Kat Bars as their favorite (15% vs. 7%), while equally likely to choose Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (14% vs. 14%).
About one-quarter (27%) of college students say they plan on dressing up for Halloween this year, while 28% are not sure and 45% don’t plan on wearing a costume. But female students are twice as likely as male students to say they plan on wearing one (34% vs. 17%).

Walking and Biking
For many Americans, college is the only time they live in a community that’s easy to navigate without a car. A recent College Pulse survey of 400 undergraduates finds that 7 in 10 (71%) agree that living on campus is nice in part because most things are walkable. However, students at private universities are more likely than students at public universities to say so (81% vs. 68%).
At the same time, a majority (53%) of college students also say they would be more likely to commute via bike if their region had safer bike routes, but private school students are more likely than public school students to agree (65% vs. 51%). Female students are also more likely than male students to agree (57% vs. 48%) that safer bike routes would make them more likely to cycle.
