Weekly Insights: Biden’s Afghanistan Withdrawal

From which administration is responsible for the Taliban’s swift takeover in Afghanistan to working in fast food, here are this week’s top college student insights.

Biden’s Afghanistan Withdrawal

The Taliban retook Afghanistan’s capital days after U.S. troops withdrew, creating a humanitarian crisis in the country. A new College Pulse survey of 663 undergraduates finds that almost half (47%) of students believe President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump share responsibility for the Taliban’s takeover 50-50.

Nevertheless, more students place the blame fully on Biden than on Trump, with 16% of students saying it was 100% Biden’s fault and just 4% saying it was 100% Trump’s fault. These views do diverge along party lines, though. One-third (34%) of Republicans believe the Taliban takeover was all Biden’s fault, compared to 1 in 10 (10%) Democrats.

Considering the Afghanistan policy of both Biden and Trump, which is the closest to your view of their respective share of responsibility for the Taliban takeover?

Fast Food Workers

Fast food restaurants have long offered job opportunities for teenagers, and a recent survey of 627 undergraduates finds that almost one-quarter (22%) have worked in fast food. However, students on financial aid are more likely than students not on financial aid to say they have worked in a fast food restaurant (23% vs. 13%).
