Weekly Insights: Olympic Games

From how students are watching the Olympics to the most anticipated events, here are this week’s top college student insights.

Olympic Games

As the world tunes into the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, a College Pulse survey of 509 undergraduates finds that 6 in 10 (62%) are watching the Summer Olympics. About one-third (34%) of students say they are watching the Games on live or recorded TV, while 31% are watching recap clips online and 19% are watching on social media. Almost 4 in 10 (38%) students say they aren’t watching the Summer Games at all.

Among students who aren’t watching, a majority say they either aren’t interested in the Olympics (36%) or sports in general (25%). Roughly 1 in 6 (15%) say they don’t have a way to watch live or recorded TV and 8% say they think the Olympics should have been canceled. However, female students are three times as likely as male students to say they think the Olympics should have been canceled this year (10% vs. 3%).

Students are most excited about gymnastics, swimming and diving, and track and field. More than half (52%) of students say they’re most excited to watch gymnastics, but female students are three times as likely as male students to say so (75% vs. 24%).
