Weekly Insights: Term Limits

From congressional term limits to the legal drinking age, here are this week’s top college student insights.

Congressional Term Limits

It’s not uncommon for politicians to represent constituents in Washington for decades, and a new College Pulse survey of 750 undergraduates finds that a majority of students across the political spectrum support limiting how long members can serve in Congress. Overall, 52% of students support both term limits and reduced salaries and benefits for representatives while 19% support just term limits. College Republicans are less likely than college Democrats to support both proposals (35% vs. 53%) and more likely to support only term limits (39% vs. 22%).

Drinking Age

A recent survey of 600 undergraduates finds that 6 in 10 (60%) disagree with the legal drinking age being 21. However, male students are more likely than female students to disagree with the current alcohol restrictions (66% vs. 56%) and almost twice as likely to strongly disagree (21% vs. 11%). Students oppose the legal drinking age despite a majority saying they don’t drink alcohol. A Student Voice survey, conducted by Inside Higher Ed and College Pulse and presented by Kaplan, found that 53% of college students say they don’t drink.
