Weekly Insights: LGBTQ Pride

From Pride month to students’ summer plans, here are this week’s top college student insights.

Pride Month

A new College Pulse survey of 600 undergraduates finds that almost one-third (28%) of LGBTQ students strongly agree that people on their campus are accepting of LGBTQ students, while a majority (58%) somewhat agree. Just 11% of LGBTQ students say others on their campus are not accepting.

When it comes to Pride celebrations this year, just 14% of LGBTQ students plan to attend a Pride parade, party, or event. Roughly 2 in 10 (22%) LGBTQ students say they’ll watch LGBTQ films to celebrate, and 1 in 10 (11%) plan to read LGBTQ books.

“I figured out I was queer a couple years ago and I’ve never been to a pride event,” a University of Montana student says. “I want to go at least once.”

Agree or disagree: People on my college campus are accepting of LGBTQ students.

Summer Plans

As students transition into summer break, a new survey of 600 undergraduates finds that 38% plan to work part time this summer, compared to 31% who plan to work full time. Almost one-third (29%) will take summer classes and 22% plan to intern. Female students are more likely than their male classmates to say they’ll work part time (40% vs. 32%) and less likely to say they’ll have a full-time job (25% vs. 40%).

Handguns

The Texas legislature recently passed a bill allowing Texans to carry handguns without a license. A recent survey of 920 students finds that almost half (45%) know how to use a handgun. However, there are stark divides across party and gender lines. Republican students are more than twice as likely as Democratic students to say they know how (71% vs. 29%). And male students are more likely than female students to know how to operate a handgun (60% vs. 33%).
