College Students Rank Indeed as the Top Job Search Website

A majority of college students look for work online these days, so it’s crucial for recruiters to understand where and how students search for job opportunities.

A new college survey of 1,000 undergraduates finds that more than 8 in 10 (81%) have looked for a job or internship online. Students become more likely to look for jobs online as they get older, and 9 in 10 (90%) seniors have searched for a job online.

More than 7 in 10 (71%) students who have looked for a job online have used Indeed, making it the most popular job search website. By comparison, 63% of students have used Handshake and 56% of students have used LinkedIn at some point. Along with using it most often, students also find Indeed the most helpful.

Students Use Indeed More Than Other Job Search Websites

While looking for jobs, students are most likely to search for specific keywords. Three-quarters (75%) of students who have looked for a job online say they search these job sites by searching keywords. By comparison, 65% say they search by job title and 57% say they search all open jobs in the area.

When students are actively looking for a job, 49% check these sites at least once a week and another 27% at least once a day. Almost two-thirds (65%) of students who have looked for a job online also say they check job websites when they’re not actively looking for a job just to see what’s out there, compared to 35% who don’t. This holds true regardless of year, with 64% of seniors and 65% of sophomores saying they check job sites when they aren’t actively looking for work.
