Work-Life Balance is Very Important to Today’s College Students

Today’s college students believe work-life balance is very important when thinking about their careers after graduation.

A new survey of 2,000 undergraduates finds that more than three-quarters (77%) say work-life balance is very important to them when looking for a job after college. It’s especially important to Black (85%) and Hispanic (80%) students, compared to white (75%) and Asian (72%) students.

However, students are split when it comes to the kind of work setup that provides the most balance. Four in 10 (40%) students say working from home allows for more work-life balance, while another 40% say it allows for less. But students of color are more likely to say working from home creates more balance. Almost half (47%) of Hispanic students say remote work is better for work-life balance, compared to 37% of white students.

Students of Color View Working From Home More Favorably

Do you think working from home full time allows for more work-life balance or less?

Despite those divides, students across lines of race and gender think remote work allows people to live healthier lives. A majority of students say cooking healthy meals (75%), finding time to exercise (61%), and finding time for hobbies (58%) are all easier while working from home. But students also say working from home presents other challenges. A majority of students believe it’s harder to disconnect from work in the evenings (71%) and communicate problems or concerns to a boss (62%) while working from home.
