Three-Quarters of College Students Worry About Juggling School and Internships During the Pandemic

The fall semester looks very different this year, and many college students worry about trying to balance school and work during a global pandemic.

A new survey of 2,500 undergraduates finds that more than three-quarters (76%) of those who are required or expected to complete an internship say they would be concerned about juggling school work and an internship during the coronavirus pandemic. White (29%) students are less likely than Asian (41%), Hispanic (38%), and Black (35%) students to say they would be very concerned, however.

Students of Color are More Likely to Worry About Juggling School and Work

How concerned would you be about juggling your school work and an internship during the pandemic?

Despite these concerns, almost 9 in 10 (85%) students who are expected to intern are worried about cancellations due to the pandemic. While a majority of students across every year are worried, juniors (50%) are more likely than freshmen (38%) and sophomores (46%) to say they are very worried.

Students had a hard time finding fall internships this year. Half (49%) of students who looked for a fall internship say it was very difficult to find one, while another 35% say it was somewhat difficult. Only 15% say it was not difficult.
